The Mauritanian Minister of Health, Prof. Kan Bebeker, and Eisa Abdullah Masoud Al Kalabani, UAE Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, have inaugurated the expansion and renovation project of the Sheikh Zayed Hospital, at a cost of US$1.5 million, which has been funded by the UAE.

The project includes the expansion and renovation of the obstetrics and gynecology department, the intensive care unit, the emergency cases section, as well as the radiology and laboratory departments. It also involves the construction of a department for urgent cases for children, an oral and dental diseases wing, control and reception rooms, pharmacy units, as well as the purchase of new medical, information and office equipment.

Al Kalabani stressed that the Sheikh Zayed Hospital has been providing services to patients in Nouakchott for 17 years. This expansion has been completely funded by the government of the UAE, which reflects the strong relations between the UAE and Mauritania, he added.

This inauguration will enhance relations between both countries, in line with the mutual aspirations of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, he added.

Dr. Humat Allah Ould Al Sheikh, Director of the Sheikh Zayed Hospital, said that this generous step carries forward the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the Arab and Islamic world.

He highlighted that the expansion of 400 square meters and restoration of 1,200 square meters will help improve the quality of the institution. It will increase the capacity of the hospital to 185 beds, from 135, and provide 8 operation rooms, instead of 6, where 80 surgeries are performed on a weekly basis, in addition to emergency surgeries.
