UAE participates in High-level Symposium on SDG 6 in Tajikistan

The UAE is participating in the international High-Level Symposium on Sustainable Development Goal (Sdg 6) and Targets titled, "Ensuring that no one is left behind in access to water and sanitation", as one of the objectives of the 2030 United Nations (UN) Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The symposium was opened by the Tajik President, Emomali Rahmon.

The event, being co-organised by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in co-operation with UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), international and regional organisations and partners for a focussed and balanced discussion on policy measures, actions and means of implementation to fast-track implementation of the water SDG and related targets.

H.E.Yacoub Yousef Al Hosni, Assistant of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, for International Organisations Affairs, led the UAE delegation. The participants stressed the need for hard work and international co-ordination in order to achieve the sixth goal of sustainable development goals, which is to ensure the eligibility of the delivery of water for all and that no one is left behind in access to water and sanitation.

In adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, member states highlighted the vital importance of water and sanitation. They incorporated a standalone sustainable development goal on water, SDG 6, "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, as part of the foundation of sustainable development." Achieving SDG 6 is essential to achieving the overall 2030 Agenda.

It is universally recognised that water is life and is essential to poverty eradication, gender equality, food security and sustainable agriculture, health, sanitation, sustainable industry, sustainable consumption and production, tourism, and sustainable urbanisation, among others.
