Ahmed Al Jarman, Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, has said the UAE is looking forward to the formation of the Libyan national reconciliation government in the light of the proposed UN-backed peace plan to end the suffering of the people of Libya.

This came during his participation in the high-level meeting on Libya on the sidelines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He noted, "As the UAE backs the people of Libya, it is concerned about the deterioration of political situation and the danger of extremism and terrorism spreading in Libya." He called for activating the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2214 on counter-terrorism in Libya and stepping up efforts to ensure stability through supporting the national reconciliation government. He said this was necessary to deal with the criminal and terrorist gangs that target Libyans and their properties and pose a threat to neighbouring Arab and African countries, as well as the European countries on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Al Jarman reiterated support to the legitimate government in Libya and the UAE's contribution towards rebuilding the Libyan institutions, including the support to the military and security institutions to build a strong national army, capable of restoring security and stability across Libya and defeating the terrorist groups.

He expressed the UAE's full support to the efforts of the UN special envoy to Libya, Bernardino Leon, to reach a political solution to the Libyan crisis and achieve security, stability and development and combat terrorism.

Al Jarman called on the parties involved to implement the peace deal to avoid any political vacuum, build constitutional institutions and start the political process to safeguard the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya.
