UAE Strengthens Global Climate and Water Security Commitments at World Governments Summit in Dubai
During the World Governments Summit, which took place in Dubai, His Excellency Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, met His Excellency Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, Minister of Water and Sanitation of Senegal. They discussed preparations for the United Nations Water Conference 2026, which will be co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal in December in the UAE. The conference will focus on global water security and sustainability, with the inaugural organizational meeting set for next month at the United Nations. Both countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to tackling global water challenges.
As part of the COP Presidencies Troika, which includes the UAE, Azerbaijan and Brazil, the UAE co-hosted the first post-COP29 event, ‘Transforming Climate Ambition and Implementation’. The event emphasized the urgent need to deliver on the UAE Consensus - the historic agreement reached at COP28 by 198 Parties to usher in a new era of climate action - and the Baku Pact. Key discussions focused on tripling renewable energy capacity, advancing equitable energy transitions, and mobilizing climate finance to build momentum toward COP30 in Belém.
At the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) Roundtable, H.E. Balalaa stressed the UAE’s leadership in scaling investments, technology, and knowledge exchange for sustainable progress. He said, "Energy efficiency is not just a climate goal—it is a catalyst for economic growth and innovation."
Demonstrating its commitment beyond dialogue, the UAE has invested USD 4.5 billion to install 15 GW of clean power across Africa through the Africa Green Investment Initiative. Additionally, the launch of ALTERRA, a private investment vehicle, is mobilizing climate finance where it is most needed, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a global leader in sustainability.
From water security to energy efficiency, the UAE remains steadfast in ensuring that no one is left behind for a global sustainability transition.
