Assistant Undersecretary for Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
As the world grapples with environmental and economic challenges, achieving sustainability has become an essential goal for nations across the globe. With Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerging as a powerful tool to help governments and organizations attain these objectives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to provide customers with simple and comprehensive services in line with the “We the UAE 2031” vision and the UAE Strategy for Government Services 2021-2025.
The Ministry has worked on harnessing AI and advanced technology in consular services to achieve sustainability and the potential benefits of these innovative initiatives to implement the vision of the UAE’s leadership and achieve the objectives of the UAE Centennial 2071, in line with the Principles of the 50.
Greener attestation processes
The Electronic Documents Attestation System (eDAS) launched in February 2023 is a cutting-edge digital platform that streamlines attestation processes for official personal affairs and business documents in the UAE. The platform enables users to submit applications and documentation electronically, reducing the need for physical paperwork and in-person visits. The system uses AI algorithms to validate and verify the submitted documents, expediting the processing time and improving the accuracy of the information.
By leveraging AI and OCR technology, eDAS helps ensure businesses comply with the legal and regulatory requirements, leading to a more transparent and secure environment for all stakeholders.
The system also features a centralized database, allowing for better coordination between various government agencies and fostering greater collaboration and data collection, sharing and analysis.
Most importantly, it aligns with the goals set by the UAE for the Year of Sustainability, through processes with reduced paper usage and a reduced carbon footprint.
Since the system was launched, 400 thousand digital attestations were conducted; without the need for a physical stickers and stamps on the documents. This saved the customer commute time and reduced paper consumption and had a considerable effect on the service’s carbon footprint, thus contributing to economic, environmental and social sustainability and supporting the UAE’s commitment to reducing emissions and achieve its commitments to reduce the impact of climate change.
Smart Mission: A Step Towards Futuristic Government Services
The UAE's Smart Mission is a recently launched initiative designed to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and quality of consular services provided by UAE missions abroad through the use of advanced technologies. With a strong focus on AI, robotics, and data analytics, the Smart Mission project aims to transform consular services, aligning with the UAE government’s Sustainability strategies to achieve a greener and more prosperous future for the nation.
Through this project, MoFA also aims to contribute to the Government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide, by ensuring all UAE nationals have access to AI-driven services and benefit from the associated sustainability gains.
Key features of the Smart Mission project include:
1. AI-driven customer service: The Smart Mission incorporates AI-powered holograms to assist customers and provide instant and accurate responses to customer queries. These AI tools help to reduce waiting times, streamline services, and enhance customer satisfaction.
2. Predictive analytics for proactive governance: The initiative employs data analytics to identify patterns and trends in consular operations, allowing for more informed decision-making and resource allocation. This enables the Ministry to anticipate and respond to potential issues and challenges.
3. Smart infrastructure: The Smart Mission promotes the development of sustainable infrastructure, with 3D printed components, energy-efficient systems, and IoT-enabled devices, which contribute to overall sustainability.
The UAE is leveraging AI to provide virtual consular assistance to citizens and residents, reducing the need for in-person visits and saving time, energy, and resources. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can handle common queries and tasks, such as scheduling appointments, providing information on services, and guiding users through application processes. This not only improves efficiency but also reduces the environmental footprint associated with traditional consular operations.
The UAE's experience serves as an inspiring example for other nations looking to leverage AI in their quest for sustainability. The UAE's commitment to harnessing AI and state-of-the-art technologies is revolutionizing the delivery of government services. With initiatives like eDAS and the Smart Mission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is creating proactive, efficient, and accessible government services that meet the evolving needs of its citizens and residents. The UAE's adoption of AI in consular services showcases the nation's commitment to harnessing technology for sustainable development. By streamlining processes, optimizing resources, enhancing security, and providing virtual assistance, the country is making strides towards achieving its sustainability goals
