This event represents a major milestone that goes beyond the traditional of hosting international conferences, embodying strategic transition toward leading “water diplomacy” and engineering sustainable solutions on the global stage. The conference centers on accelerating the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which ensures the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
The 2026 conference holds particular significance as it follows the UN 2023 Water Conference and precedes the UN 2028 Water Conference scheduled to be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which will mark the conclusion of the 'Water Action Decade 2018-2028.'"
Recognizing its location in one of the world's most arid regions, the UAE has long understood that water security is the cornerstone of any developmental and economic drive. To this end, the UAE and Senegal have engaged in comprehensive consultative talks with member states and partners to ensure the conference reflects global priorities, emerging challenges, and practical opportunities to achieve SDG 6.
This pioneering role, actively shaped and pursued by the UAE’s wise leadership, is not new, but rather a natural extension of the momentum generated during the nation’s presidency of COP28. The UAE successfully placed water at the heart of climate negotiations and launched major global initiatives, most notably the "Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative." This initiative aims to address the global water scarcity crisis by leveraging innovation, technology, forging strategic partnerships, and developing scalable solutions, exemplified by the "XPRIZE Water Scarcity", a five-year global competition.
For the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, which hosts the highest number of countries suffering from absolute water stress, the UN Water Conference holds profound significance. Through this global event, the UAE provides a vital platform to amplify regional voices and elevate local challenges to the international decision-making arena. In this context, the conference offers an opportunity to attract and localize technological investments, and foster cross-border cooperation in managing vital water resources, ultimately serving the region's stability, economic prosperity, and development.
