UAE Calls for an Integrated Approach to Address Environmental Challenges

Tue 30/6/2026

During its participation in the International Desert Conference, the United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at addressing the challenges of desertification, water scarcity, land degradation, and food security through innovation, advanced technologies, and effective partnerships.

During the conference, hosted in the city of Arica, Republic of Chile, the UAE emphasized that desertification, water scarcity, and land degradation are not isolated challenges, but rather interconnected issues that require integrated solutions combining sustainable natural resource management, technological innovation, and international cooperation. Such an approach enhances resilience to environmental challenges and advances sustainable development.

In his address to the conference, Mohamed Saeed Alneyadi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Chile, stated that the UAE's long-term vision is founded on investing in innovation, scientific research, and the development of practical and sustainable solutions that strengthen communities' capacity to adapt to growing environmental challenges.

He highlighted the UAE's success in establishing itself as a leading global model for sustainable development through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and sound natural resource management.

He further stressed the importance of adopting an integrated approach to addressing the accelerating environmental challenges facing the world, noting that the sustainable management of water resources is a fundamental pillar of social stability and economic prosperity.

Ambassador Alneyadi added that the International Desert Conference reflects the growing importance of international partnerships in addressing cross-border challenges by strengthening scientific and technical cooperation and developing innovative strategies that support global food security, protect ecosystems, and contribute to building a future driven by knowledge and innovation.

He also underscored that the United Arab Emirates continues to reinforce its position as a key contributor to global food security by adopting innovative agricultural solutions and investing in advanced technologies for sustainable agriculture and water resource management.

He further highlighted the role of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), headquartered in the UAE, which plays a vital role in developing research-based solutions to address water scarcity, land degradation, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions.

In this context, Ambassador Alneyadi praised the growing partnership between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Chile, which extends from agriculture and environmental protection to innovation, advanced technologies, and space sciences.

He noted that this partnership opens broad opportunities for developing data-driven smart solutions to monitor desertification, improve natural resource management, and support informed decision-making through the use of satellite technologies, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence.

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Alneyadi stressed that shared responsibility and international solidarity are the cornerstones of achieving common development goals, emphasizing that addressing global environmental challenges requires close cooperation among governments, scientific institutions, the private sector, and civil society.

The UAE also renewed its invitation during the conference to actively participate in the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, which it will co-host with the Republic of Senegal from 8 to 10 December 2026.

The conference aims to accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The UAE emphasized that the conference will serve as a global platform to strengthen partnerships, promote investment and innovation in the water sector, and accelerate practical solutions that address the close interlinkages between water, food, and land, thereby advancing sustainable development and enhancing communities' resilience to environmental and climate challenges.

The International Desert Conference also witnessed international recognition of the UAE's leading role in addressing global water challenges.

Participants highlighted the achievements of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, particularly the launch of the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition, which offers total prize funding of USD 119 million over five years, as well as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award, recognizing both as among the world's leading initiatives supporting innovation and sustainability in the water sector.

Participants at the conference—which brought together leading experts, policymakers, and researchers specializing in water resilience and sustainable development in arid and semi-arid regions—affirmed that the UAE's initiatives have significantly advanced scientific research and the development of innovative technologies aimed at providing practical and sustainable solutions to water scarcity.

They further noted that these initiatives have strengthened international cooperation among academic and research institutions, as well as public and private sector stakeholders, and have become a global model for promoting innovation and empowering communities with access to safe and sustainable water resources.
