UAE and UNDP in Cuba signed an agreement to support the relief efforts after Hurricane Irma.

As part of the UAE's efforts to build bridges of cooperation and the implementation of post-hurricane reconstruction projects in the Caribbean, H.E. Bader Almatrooshi, UAE Ambassador to Cuba, signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Program in Cuba (UNDP) on June 14th, 2019. The project “Recovering houses with improved water access in areas hit by Hurricane Irma” contributes to the recovery of houses with safe roof solutions and rainwater harvesting solutions including the installation of gutters and tanks, prioritizing vulnerable groups affected by the hurricane in the Ciego de Ávila province (Cuba). The UAE Ambassador recalled that this contribution is one example of other contributions in collaboration with UN agencies. In 2017 the UAE contributed a total of 10 mill USD in assistance to the Caribbean countries affected by this hurricane. This is part of UAE´s commitment to the relief efforts in the aftermath of natural disasters. H.E. Maribel Gutierrez, UNDP Representative to Cuba, thanked the Government of the United Arab Emirates for the contribution and commended its regional and international efforts in the field of humanitarian action and foreign assistance.
