The economic relations between the two countries were initially based on Romanian goods export. The United Arab Emirates and Romania formalized the relation by opening in 1974the Office for Economic Promotion and Cooperation in Dubai, an entity that continued to work afterwards in the benefit of the diplomatic relations between both countries. The Romanian Office for Economic Promotion and Cooperation was later integrated into the Romanian Consulate General established in the UAE.
The traditional trade relations between Romania and the United Arab Emirates led to an increasing interest of Romanian companies for the Emirati market, many of them establishing branches in the UAE, mainly in the emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, mostly in the fields of IT & Communication, general trade, construction, real estate, waste management, services etc.
As for the UAE investors present in Romania, DP World, sole shareholder of Constanţa South Container Terminal (CSCT) SRL and Al Dahra Agriculture are among the most visible in the Romanian market.
