The Permanent Committee for Human Rights convenes a workshop on promoting and protecting the rights of people of determination within the framework of national legislation and policies
The workshop was attended by Consultant Mr. Suleiman Almaazmi, Project Advisor on Social Welfare at the Ministry of Community Development, and Mrs. Rehab Muhammed Boresly, member of the Committee on the Rights of People of Determination (Persons with Disabilities), in addition to representatives from relevant entities, institutions, and public welfare associations.
During his opening statement of the workshop, Consultant Almaazmi reaffirmed the UAE’s keenness to enshrine the principles of human rights and inclusivity to cover various groups and social segments, especially people of determination, and to establish a legislative base through Federal Law No. (29) of 2006 in respect to the Rights of People with Special Needs. Noting that since the ratification of the Convention in 2010, the country has worked to prepare and implement policies and laws that are consistent with the values and principles therein, and represents an ethical reference for proper social upbringing that enhances the care and integration of people of determination into society.
For her part, Mrs. Maryam Al Balushi, Director of the People of Determination Welfare and Rehabilitation Department at the Ministry of Community Development, reviewed the efforts of the UAE in advancing and protecting the rights of people of determination with respect to national legislation, policies, and programs adopted by the country, in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of People with Determination.
In delivering the keynote speech of the workshop, Ms. Borsely, explored the obligations of the state parties within the Convention on the Rights of People with Determination, the role of the established committee that is based upon, its tasks, and methods of action. She also reviewed the mechanisms for countries to prepare their periodic reports within the framework of the simplified procedure. In addition, she also reiterated the importance of the state parties to closely follow-up on the final document issued by the relevant committee, as well as adhering to observations and recommendations in line with the framework of the Convention.
Notably, the Permanent Committee for Human Rights, chaired by His Excellency Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to His Highness the UAE President, is responsible for the preparation of the periodic report that combines the third and fourth reports on the Convention on the Rights of People of Determination, in consultation with the National Human Rights Committee that was established in accordance with the Paris Principles, civil society institutions and associations, as well as the related institutions.
