The Arab Group has made observations on the opening statement of the Chair of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.

This came in a statement, delivered today by Ahmed Al Nuaimi,1st Secretary at the UAE's Permanent Mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on behalf of the group, in response to opening remarks made by the Committee's chair.

The Arab Group noted that the related matters included in the working papers and country statements which were not mentioned in the Chair's statement, are of great importance and reflect the discussions of the 2nd Preparatory Committee's session.

The Group affirmed that the NPT review conference is the main platform for following up the implementation of the 1995 resolution on the Middle East. It also emphasised the importance of declaring the Middle East a region free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction.

The Group also observed that while all Arab countries are parties to the NPT, Israel remains the only state in the region that is not party to the treaty and, in contravention of the relevant international resolutions, is not subject to the IAEA's Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements.
