The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, has organised the second group wedding of 400 brides and grooms in Socotra Governorate, as part of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to hold a series of wedding, under his patronage, to benefit 2,200 people in eight Yemeni governorates.
The initiative is also part of the UAE’s humanitarian efforts in Yemen during the Year of Zayed.
Dr. Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, Secretary-General of the ERC, stated that the ERC has begun implementing the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed to organise group weddings in Yemen, under his patronage and the monitoring of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC. He added that the initiative confirms that the wise leadership is aware of the humanitarian, social and economic conditions in Yemen, as well as its desire to support Yemeni youth.
Al Falahi stressed that the dire economic conditions in Yemen are preventing its youth from getting married, and the initiative is achieving a range of objectives, including reducing the cost of marriage and promoting solidarity among the Yemeni community.
Ramzi Mahrous, Governor of Socotra, expressed the appreciation of his governorate and its citizens for the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed for the group weddings, while adding that this generous initiative reflects the deep ties between the UAE and Yemen, supports the social and psychological stability of its youth, and promotes community partnerships.
He also praised the monitoring of Sheikh Hamdan of the ERC’s ongoing efforts to support the governorate’s development and reconstruction, especially in the areas of housing, health and education.
