The United Arab Emirates condemns the seizure of a UAE-registered civilian aircraft at by Somali security forces at Mogadishu International Airport in Somalia on Sunday, March 8, 2018.
Forty-seven UAE armed forces personnel on board the plane were held at gunpoint and assaulted by Somali security forces, while sizeable cash funds allocated to support the Somali army and trainees and pay their salaries – in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding on military cooperation signed by the two countries in November 2014 – were seized.
This action contradicts the established diplomatic norms and traditions between countries, is a serious breach of the provisions of the said Memorandum of Understanding, and thus transgresses the rules of international law and norms.
The Ministry stresses that the UAE deplores this violation of international law and norms, at a time when the UAE provided all kinds of political, economic, military and humanitarian support in the most dire circumstances to establish security and stability in the Somali Federal Republic.
