The UAE Embassy in Berlin has organised an annual iftar event, in co-operation with the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, which was attended by Sigmar Gabriel, German Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy German Chancellor, Karl Justen, Catholic Chairman of GKKE and Commissioner of the German bishops, and Rabbi Andreas Nakhama, as well as political, economic and cultural figures and Arab and Islamic countries ambassadors in Berlin.
Ali Abdullah Al Ahmad, UAE Ambassador to Germany, delivered the opening speech in which he welcomed the guests and spoke about the country’s efforts to promote tolerance and fraternity in the community, while referring to the Hedayah Centre and the Sawab Centre, which aim to correct false concepts about Islam and confront extremism and violence in the community.
He also stressed the importance of international co-operation in confronting terrorism that threatens all countries regardless of their religions, beliefs or ideologies. He also called on Muslims to respect European values and to stop using places of worship in Europe to promote messages of hatred and extremism, in the name of religion.
Ayman Mazyek, Chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, called on non-Muslims to consider the efforts of Muslims in combatting terrorism and extremism, which are falsely linked to Islam around the world. He also highlighted the Central Council of Muslims’ programmes that aim to discourage youth from extremism, by running these programmes in Germany’s mosques.
Mazyek stressed that the first steps to combatting terrorism should be to eliminate its causes, such as wars. He also highlighted that Daesh is trying to promote terrorism in the West by forcing western communities to exclude Muslims while the right-wing parties, which have recently emerged, are helping to achieve this goal, by promoting ideas such as conspiracies to Islamise the West. He called on all parties to co-operate and combat the decline of the community while stressing that Muslims in Germany are also German citizens.
Sigmar Gabriel, in his speech, stated that public opinion can sometimes link Islam to the phenomenon of extremism while highlighting that Islam cherishes the values of tolerance and dialogue, reflected in the iftar. He added that Muslims in Germany are German citizens who are living normal lives, and they do not deserve to be linked to extremism and terrorism.
He further added that military action is sometimes necessary, but it is not the only solution to eliminate terrorism. He also stated that the solution must start by eliminating the causes of despair and providing hope to youth in crisis.
