The United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union shortly after the formation of the Federation on 8 December 1971. These relations were translated into tangible diplomatic engagement when Moscow opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi in 1986, followed by the opening of the UAE Embassy in the Russian capital the following year.
Over the decades, bilateral relations have continued to evolve and deepen, underpinned by mutual trust and a shared vision on a range of international issues. The two countries are committed to the principles of multilateralism in the international system, the pursuit of political and diplomatic solutions to conflicts, adherence to international law, and joint efforts to combat extremism and terrorism.
In 2018, the relationship reached a historic milestone when His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation signed the Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the two countries. This landmark agreement crowned years of growing cooperation and ushered in a new phase of bilateral relations at the highest level, further strengthening collaboration in pursuit of shared interests and contributing to regional and international peace, security, and stability.
