Water as a Key Pillar of Development: From Abu Dhabi to the World UN Water Conference 2026: From Commitments to Implementation

Water is no longer merely a natural resource or a technical issue confined to resource management and infrastructure. It has become a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, economic prosperity, public health, food security, energy production and environmental protection. In a world where approximately 2.1 billion people still lack access to safely managed drinking water services, the need to strengthen international cooperation and accelerate collective action has become increasingly urgent. This requires translating commitments into partnerships, investments and practical solutions that make a tangible difference in people's lives.

This priority is particularly significant in the Arab region, where the sustainable management of water resources is closely linked to economic and social development, agricultural production, public health and the sustainability of ecosystems. Ensuring the sustainability of water resources plays an important role in supporting development and improving the quality of life for present and future generations. Against this backdrop, strengthening international cooperation, exchanging expertise, leveraging technology and mobilizing investment are vital to developing sustainable solutions that respond to the needs and aspirations of communities.

Guided by this vision, the United Arab Emirates, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal, will host the 2026 United Nations Water Conference in Abu Dhabi from 8 to 10 December. The conference comes at a critical juncture in global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, particularly SDG 6, which seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The significance of the Abu Dhabi conference extends beyond its location and timing. The partnership between the UAE and Senegal reflects the importance of South-South cooperation in strengthening multilateral action, broadening international participation and linking development priorities with practical, implementable solutions. The conference also presents an opportunity to build on the momentum generated by the 2023 United Nations Water Conference and accelerate progress toward achieving SDG 6.

The UAE's preparations for the conference are driven by its firm belief that the challenge lies not only in identifying what needs to be done, but also in accelerating implementation and mobilizing the partnerships and resources required to deliver results. Accordingly, the UAE, in cooperation with Senegal, the United Nations and international partners, is working to position the conference as a platform for mobilizing political will, expanding investment and financing opportunities, accelerating innovation and knowledge exchange, and strengthening cooperation to develop practical, affordable and scalable solutions that deliver tangible and sustainable outcomes.

These priorities are reflected in the conference's thematic program, which features six interactive dialogues: “Water for People,” “Water for Prosperity,” “Water for Planet,” “Water for Cooperation,” “Water in Multilateral Processes,” and “Investments for Water.” The final dialogue holds particular significance given the need to mobilize additional financial resources, strengthen the role of the private sector and financial institutions, and develop projects capable of attracting investment and generating long-term development impact.

The conference also places strong emphasis on broad and inclusive participation by stakeholders beyond traditional government frameworks. In this context, the UAE will host "The Oasis," alongside the UN-led Blue Zone, where the conference's official program will take place. The Oasis will serve as an open and inclusive space bringing together innovators, investors, policymakers, experts, young people and communities. It will provide opportunities to exchange expertise, showcase solutions and forge new partnerships that help translate ideas into action.

The UAE's contribution extends beyond hosting this global event. It is rooted in its national experience in sustainable water resource management and an international approach that integrates diplomacy, development, innovation and investment. The UAE has placed the development of innovative solutions and the expansion of international partnerships at the heart of its water-related efforts, recognizing that shared challenges require cooperation across borders, sectors and institutions.

In this regard, the UAE launched the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative in 2024 to help address water scarcity challenges by accelerating technological innovation, raising global awareness and mobilizing international efforts to develop innovative, practical and scalable solutions. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) also launched the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform, which aims to mobilize a total of USD 2 billion in financing. ADFD will allocate an initial USD 1 billion between 2026 and 2030 to support development projects and innovative initiatives in the water sector, targeting approximately 10 million beneficiaries worldwide.

These initiatives reflect the UAE's approach to bringing together the efforts of governments, development institutions, the private sector and the scientific community, while linking financing and innovation with the actual needs of communities. Sustainable progress in the water sector requires more than technological advancement or financial resources. It calls for effective partnerships that facilitate knowledge transfer, scale up solutions and strengthen their long-term development impact.

As 2030 approaches, it is increasingly important to harness the momentum generated by the Abu Dhabi conference to accelerate collective action to achieve SDG 6. The opportunity presented by the conference lies not merely in bringing stakeholders together, but in strengthening their ability to work collectively, directing investments toward priority projects, expanding access to innovation and knowledge, and establishing partnerships that endure beyond the conference.

From this perspective, the aspirations of the UAE, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal, extend beyond the successful hosting of the three-day conference. They encompass the lasting impact it can generate: partnerships evolving into sustained cooperation, investments translating into concrete projects, and technologies progressing from development to practical application. Such outcomes will contribute to improving lives and accelerating progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2026 United Nations Water Conference represents an opportunity to reinforce an international approach that goes beyond announcing commitments to translating them into tangible and sustainable results. From Abu Dhabi, and in partnership with Senegal and the international community, the UAE looks forward to advancing this vision, guided by its firm belief that investing in water sustainability is an investment in people, development and prosperity for generations to come.
