Entry Requirements for UAE Nationals
UAE nationals holding diplomatic, special, or ordinary passports may visit Portugal without obtaining a visa in advance for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This allowance applies to the Schengen Area as a whole, including time spent in other Schengen countries.
Passports must have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen Area. Travelers are advised to maintain at least six months of passport validity and to check the latest entry requirements before departure.
For further information, consult the European Union’s guidance for non-EU travelers.
Before You Travel
- Register your travel details with MoFA’s Twajudi service and keep your contact information updated throughout your trip.
- Review the latest travel guidance issued by MoFA and the UAE Embassy in Lisbon.
- Keep secure electronic copies of your passport and other important documents.
- Use reputable travel providers when booking flights, accommodations, and transportation.
- Arrange travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and your planned activities.
- Check Portuguese customs requirements before traveling with medication, food, valuables, or other restricted items.
- If traveling with domestic workers, confirm their visa requirements and any applicable employment obligations with the Portuguese authorities before departure.
Customs and Cash Declarations
Travelers entering or leaving the European Union with €10,000 or more, or its equivalent in another currency, in cash or qualifying financial instruments must declare it to customs.
Avoid carrying unnecessary amounts of cash, and retain receipts for currency exchanges and purchases of valuable items. For further information, visit Lisbon Airport’s guidance on cash declarations.
During Your Stay
- Respect Portuguese laws, local customs, and the privacy of others.
- Provide accurate information to immigration and customs officials and comply with airport security procedures.
- Keep your passport, travel documents, and valuables secure.
- Verify the identity and authority of anyone requesting your identification documents.
- Do not leave your passport or Emirates ID as security for a payment or service.
- If your passport is lost or stolen, report the incident to the local police and contact the UAE Embassy in Lisbon for assistance.
Driving in Portugal
Visitors may use a valid UAE driving license in Portugal for up to 185 days after entry, provided they have not established residence in the country. This driving allowance does not extend the permitted immigration stay.
Carry your original driving license and follow local traffic regulations. Before renting a vehicle, confirm the rental company’s documentation and insurance requirements, including whether it requires an International Driving Permit.
Business Visits and Longer Stays
If visiting Portugal for business, verify the credentials of prospective business partners and obtain independent legal advice before signing contracts or granting a power of attorney.
For work, study, or long-term residence, check the applicable visa and residence requirements with the Portuguese authorities in advance. Keep residence documents and other required permits valid throughout your stay.
If you require legal assistance, consult a licensed lawyer. In the event of detention or a serious legal matter, request that the UAE Embassy in Lisbon be notified and seek advice on your rights under Portuguese law.
Emergency Assistance
For police, ambulance, or fire services in Portugal, call 112.
UAE nationals requiring assistance during an emergency or crisis abroad may contact MoFA’s dedicated 24-hour emergency hotline at +971 80024.
