Cultural cooperation represents an important dimension of the longstanding relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Iraq, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage, promoting intercultural dialogue, and strengthening cooperation across the fields of culture, education, and the arts.
A landmark example of this partnership is the UAE’s support for the reconstruction and restoration of the historic Al-Nouri Grand Mosque and its iconic Al-Hadba Minaret in Mosul. Implemented in partnership with UNESCO and in cooperation with ICCROM, the project was completed in 2025 and represents one of the most significant cultural heritage restoration initiatives undertaken in Iraq. The UAE also supported the restoration of Al-Saa’a Church as part of UNESCO’s “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” initiative, contributing to the preservation of one of the city’s prominent religious and historic landmarks.
The completion and inauguration of these restored landmarks in 2025 marked an important milestone in efforts to safeguard Mosul’s cultural heritage. The UAE’s contribution reflects its enduring commitment to preserving the region’s shared cultural legacy and promoting the values of coexistence, tolerance, and dialogue, while safeguarding cultural identity for future generations.
