The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Serbia have maintained bilateral relations since establishing diplomatic relations in 2007. Since then, ties between the two countries have continued to develop through an exchange of visits and high-level meetings, as well as enhanced communication between officials of the two countries. Among the most notable meetings was that between His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Excellency Aleksandar Vucic, President of the Republic of Serbia. At the time, His Highness was Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, while His Excellency was Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia.
The two countries signed a Cooperation Agreement, establishing a framework for enhancing bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the Joint Commission on Consular Affairs in Abu Dhabi. The first session of the Joint Commission for Cooperation between the governments of the two countries, held in Belgrade in April 2019, contributed to strengthening coordination and expanding areas of cooperation. The Agreement on Mutual Visa Exemption for citizens of the two countries, signed in September 2018 and which entered into force in May 2019, was an important step in strengthening ties between the two peoples and facilitating the movement of citizens between the two countries.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between the governments of the two countries, signed in Abu Dhabi on 11 September 2022, marked an important milestone in the development of bilateral relations, providing a legal framework for developing the strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation across various fields. This was followed by the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Serbia on 5 October 2024, reflecting growing economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and their efforts to broaden the prospects for partnership and investment.
The first economic relations between the Republic of Serbia and the United Arab Emirates emerged in the second decade of the 21st century. Their continuous economic cooperation dates back to February 17, 2013, when the Interstate Agreement on Cooperation was signed. The importance of this agreement lies in the opportunities it opened for strengthening economic ties and implementing a series of joint economic projects.
