  • The United Arab Emirates is one of the first states to recognize the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
  • Since that time the ties between the two states have developed highly and fruitfully in various spheres. It is noteworthy that the bilateral relations became much closer than ever after the Embassy of United Arab Emirates was opened in Baku in 2011.
  • Therefore, two periods of the relations between the two countries can be distinguished: before and after the UAE Embassy was open in Azerbaijan.
  • The period till 2011 is characterized by the visits carried out between our countries at top levels, the activity of our delegations, which would participate at international conferences, exhibitions and festivals organized in these countries, meet and discuss important issues interesting for both sides.
  • Azerbaijan and United Arab Emirates were and are still cooperating within the bounds of significant international organizations, such as the United Nations Organization, Islamic Conference Organization and other influential regional and international organizations. We also established the Joint Commission on Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation between our Governments. We hold meetings and organize business forums; our companies take part at the exhibitions both in the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan.
  • Due to these aforementioned visits, there were signed appropriate treaties, Protocols and Memorandums of Understanding between our countries aiming at development of the existing reciprocal trust and respect. This significant historic event was then followed by another important visit.
  • In 2008 Elmar Mammadyarov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Republic made an official visit to UAE and during this visit he conducted meetings with Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the successor to the throne of the country and deputy Commander in Chief of Armed Forces, Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the minister of Foreign Affairs, Lubna Al-Gasimi, the minister of Foreign Trade and Sultan bin Said Al-Mansuri, the minister of Economy. A number of reciprocal visits and meetings took place as a foundation of our strong brotherhood relationship, we have today.
  • November 2011 was a new start to prompt the fruitful cooperation. That is the date, when the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates was open in Baku, which would include the consular services and deal with not only political and economic issues, but also educational and cultural.
  • Soon after this remarkable event on 14 February 2012 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan paid a working visit to Azerbaijan. Within this visit Mr. Minister met with his counterpart Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov and both stressed the high level of the development of the relations between the two countries. Within one year the Embassy's efforts to draw the two countries closer gave its result:
  • Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry established its first overseas office in the capital of Azerbaijan. Now Baku is Dubai Chamber's door to the other countries of the Region, and at the same time Dubai Chamber makes it easy for the Azerbaijani businessmen and companies to have an access to the economic opportunities in the United Arab Emirates.
  • Another brilliant example of our friendly ties and partnership is the Vice President and Prime-Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's official visit to Azerbaijan in April, 2015. There was held a meeting with the President of Azerbaijan Republic His Highness Mr. Ilham Aliyev, at which both sides expressed their confidence that the visit will yield good results reflected on the future of bilateral relations in various economic sectors especially investment partnership.
  • And in February of 2016 President Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to the United Arab Emirates. His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and President His Highness Mr. Ilham Aliyev met to discuss friendship and cooperation between the two countries, along with regional and international issues of mutual concern. The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi noted that President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is interested in the joint work in various fields. Additionally, the discussions focused on ways to benefit from many opportunities available in the two countries through establishing successful partnerships for the advantage of the two friendly peoples.
  • Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan His Highness Mr. Ilham Aliyev held official discussions as a part of the official visit, as well. The issues such as peace, stability and economic development were included into the talks. The two leaders focused on ways to further enhance co-operation between the two friendly countries to include wider domains in the investment partnership, trade, tourist and cultural exchange as well as an increase in the number of flights between UAE airports and Baku to contribute positively in developing mutual tourism and bridge the distance between the two friendly peoples especially in terms of mutual visits between business persons and investors of both sides.
  • The United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan have developed very strong, reliable friendship and brotherhood relations and necessary steps are continuously taken to expand the cooperation in industry, energy, agriculture, communication and high-tech, also in transport, trade, investment, tourism, launching of new airlines, education and culture.
